Inside The Eagles Nest - Vol 19

05/08/2009

Big week in everything

By Duane Schultz

WITH no Eagles games on the weekend, there is no match report to follow the proceeding paragraphs.

But, Round 18 of SANFL went a little something like this (cue trumpets, big band and crazy movie voice over guy)…Rampant Glenelg holds onto the minor premiership position after its 14.8 (92) to 12.10 (82) defeat of Norwood last week, while the Double Blues beat North 13.16 (94) to 8.8 (56) to sew up third spot.

Central District had a convincing 40 point win over Port Adelaide and West Adelaide trounced the Panthers 22.7 (139) to 7.9 (51).

Also, we heard the news Eagles stalwart Ron Fuller decided to call time on his nine year coaching tenure at Oval Ave.

He leaves some big shoes for the next candidate to fill.

Under Fuller’s reign the Eagles have missed only one finals series (2008), won a premiership (2006) and blooded 100 league debutants.

Also he is only the second coach in SANFL history to coach and play in more than 200 games at the same club – John Cahill (Port Adelaide) is the other.

Meanwhile, West Adelaide lost two of its most senior players for the rest of the season (Damien Cupido and Salim Hassan) after they elected to take a break from the game.

In other news last week, we saw shock jock Kyle Sandilands lose his gig as a judge on the upcoming Australian Idol series in the aftermath of a live radio stunt that went wrong.

Also, the crude oil price reached US$71 a barrel and the All Ords rose 1.2 per cent to sit at 4313.90

Some crazy people posted a you-tube video of their walk – or dance – down the aisle which was recreated on Channel Seven’s Dancing With The Stars program.

The Aussies drew the third test at Edgbaston thanks largely to a century from Michael Clarke and a flat wicket – thanks rain.

I Gotta Feeling by The Black Eyed Peas was number one on the ARIA charts last week and Godwin Grech, the public servant embroiled in the infamous ute-gate scandal, revealed he was the one who created the email that started it all.

Also, The Advertiser revealed a “ground breaking story” about how much water isn’t in the Lower Lakes at the moment – maybe the only slow news day all week.

As you can see, it’s been a big week in football and in everything else as well.

The Inner Sanctum

So what’s been happening Inside the Eagles Nest this week?

Reserves captain Brendan Papps turned 21 on the weekend and interstate star turned Eagle Jay “Cheap as Chips, Cheap, Cheap, Cheap, Cheap as Chips” Cheep held a fundraiser for charity – great bloke he is.

A future diary date for Eagles fans is James “Lady Remington” Rimington’s birthday Thursday, August 6.

Look out for his entertaining Supper with the Sarge interview on the website later this week.

Meantime, Reserves assistant coach Anthony Lamond gave us a look at his acting talents – he’s been rubbing shoulders with Eagles pin-up boy Adam Grocke again.

An anonymous source, who will remain anonymous out of fear of persecution, sent me a link via email (how they got my email is as unknown to me as the contents of Spam) pointing to an audition tape posted on You Tube which stars Lamond as a news reporter.

Follow the link below to have a laugh.

Reports are circulating – their validity also as sketchy as Jarrad “Boffa” Wright taking a phone call while on the thrown in the Eagles toilets before training– that Lamond and Grocke will be starring in Adelaide’s version of Underbelly where a guest appearance will be made by Ken “Curtains” McGregor who will play the part of infamous mob boss The Mad Dog.

Sorry to interrupt the flow of this blog, but I need to get this off my chest.

I am increasingly becoming annoyed at the stupid Haggle Co. guy, you know:”You’ve got to Haggle Haggle” whose annoying persona keeps popping up on my television screen.

I was particularly upset when he interrupted the “riveting” midday movie I watched while recovering in hospital from my wrecked knee – daytime television needs a lot of work, maybe Lamond and Grocke can help with that.

Now I’ve got that off my chest, time to move on…

While I was surfing Facebook, I come across a couple of status updates that were of some concern.

For those unfamiliar, Facebook is an online social network where people have a “profile” page where they “post” information and pictures that best illustrate their personality.

Status updates are a tool where users can say what is on their mind at any given time of day, which is relayed to the rest of the Facebook community.

Premiership player Sam Fairclough’s status last week was “who will marry me?” and Andrew Hank, who I criticised for his fashion choices in last week’s blog posted “I looked good at uni today”

Hmmmm, best we set up a meeting with the leadership group about this behaviour.

Moving on…

Wedding Bells at Oval Ave

There are calls for skipper Mark “Big Mac with cheese, no pickles” McKenzie to pop the question to long-time partner Stacey, following the trend his team mates have set this year.

During Luke “Powelly” Powell’s interview on Eagles TV – have a look if you get a chance – with Mark “Paso Doble” Passador, suggested McKenzie should take the plunge.

The list of engaged Eagles this year:

Luke Jarrad

Leigh Treeby

Mark Passador

Luke Powell

Brad Dabrowski

Time to step-up inspirational leader.
